INTOLERANCES/ ALLERGIES
The first thing to point out is that food allergies are not as common as you may think as only 2% of adults are actually allergic to food. An allergic reaction to food involves an immune response, the release of antibodies and symptoms such as itchy skin or a runny nose. Allergies are often inherited and so are usually evident at a young age but luckily most children grow out of their sensitivities by the age of 3. The foods that are most likely to cause an allergic reaction are: peanuts, cows milk, egg, soya, fish and shellfish.
Food intolerances are more common and occur when the body cannot break down the food, for example those with milk intolerances often lack the enzyme lactase so cannot therefore break down milk sugar. Lactase and gluten intolerances are the most common in the UK.
If you are regularly experiencing skin rashes, rhinitis, headaches, flatulence or nausea it may be
caused by an allergy or intolerance to food. Unfortunately it is not easy to diagnose food allergy or intolerance. Whilst there are some validated clinical tests available, other bogus or unreliable tests are also advertised. It is best to see your GP first if you believe you are allergic or intolerant to any food item.
Food allergies or intolerances can often be mistaken for irritable bowel syndrome. It may be useful to keep a food diary and relate this to your symptoms to try and find the cause of your problem. It is important to confirm the exact food involved as often similar products have different ingredients. Sometimes it can be a reaction to an additive in a food item not food itself. Many people self-diagnose and subsequently needlessly restrict this item from their diet; this can lead to vitamin or mineral deficiencies unless carefully managed.
